Chair backs or seats with small holes around the edge are designed for hand caning.

Machine woven sheet cane came into use after the 1860's.
Chairs have a groove around the seat to secure the sheet of cane with a spline.

Rush seats are woven with fibre rush. A pattern of four distinct triangles is formed.
